I recently released some software to all my subscribers. It’s an optin footer that greatly increases the optin rate for your website. In order to help people get maximum benefit from the footer, I held a webcast and installed it for a few websites, including customizations to make it fit with the website.
The reason I wanted to post it here is that it turned out to be a good tutorial about using a fantastic free tool (Inkscape) to create graphics for your website. I actually show you how to use Photoshop too.
You can download the HD version below the video. If you watch it on the page, click the full screen button so that you get all the details.

Daniel, we met at the Coming Home 3. Just wanted to compliment you on the photo. Lotsa personality, terrific lighting and makes you look super smart, which you are.
Hope your business is exploding – you are worth it!
Thanks Natalie!
I like the plugin! I also appreciate the installation and customization videos to make it just that much simpler. In one of the videos, you mentioned a future video that would discuss customizing the graphics. Any thoughts on when that will be available?
This is it. If you watch this 45 minute video you’ll see how to use the original graphics file in inkscape to completely customize your footer.
Nice plugin Daniel, And to give it away for freeyou are really moving the “freeline” to build a list.
I Have a question about the plugin, How can you configure your plugin to show up on certain pages only or the blog posts only. For Example , I have a CMS wordpress theme and don’t want it to show on my lead capture page /squeeze page or homepage? The visitor will not be login into site.
Great Plugin!
Right now this isn’t possible. I’m pretty sure a feature like that will make it into a future release though.
Great question, i am having the same problem, i just want the like button just a the TOP of the post and not at the bottom.
It would be great if there was a way where i can just paste a peace of code in my template to call the plugin.
thanks!
keep up the great work!
I think you mean the facebook like plugin. That’s a good idea. I’ll make that change soon.
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the plug-in. It’s a fantastic idea! The first time I saw it on the challenge web site I subscribed immediately to that site. It doesn’t impact the user experience, which is the key element.
It will be interesting to see how it impacts my sign up rate.
Thanks again Claire
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the plugin, I think it’s awesome. Can you please tell me if it is compatible with the Thesis Theme as my IT guys is having a problem installing the video in the link?!
Thanks again,
Lisa.
It looks like you got it figured out. Your site looks good. Of course it does work with Thesis as you’ve found out.
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the reply and the thoughts on my new blog. I wasn’t actually specific enough on what I was asking. My IT guy is having trouble getting the video uploaded in the “click here” section of the plugin and says it’s because it’s not compatible with the Thesis Theme. Is that the case or is he potentially not proficient enough?
Thanks again for the great plugin and your responses,
Lisa.
Hi Daniel,
Just wanted to say how good the optin crusher software really is. I’m wondering if you can email me back because my business partner an I (who are based in Sydney, Australia) are just starting a local business marketing company here in Sydney. I also understand that you are full with work right now but we would be interested in talking to you about the possibility of liasing with us in a strategy capacity shich you would bill us for but we would then go away and get the work done by other contractors. Anyway I would really appreciate a reply and if this is not possible then perhaps you might be able to suggest an alternative!
Keep up the fantastic work, Cheers Francis
hey dan, how come my optin get cuts of at the download button, it seems like it doesn’t fit my screen? look at my site http://www.herbodyfitness.com to see what i’m talking about.
Greg, it looks OK to me, except that the navigation bar covers the lightbox. For that you’ll have to change the z-index of either the lightbox or the navigation on your site.
ok, but for some reason on my computer and the computer i checked it on, the download button overlaps, the arrow button. do u know why it looks like that?
i’m not really good at the html stuff, where is the z-index located and how do i change it?
thanks
Greg, you’ll want to go to edit plugin and find the file optincrusher.css
Near the bottom of the file are the z-index settings for the lightbox. This line
z-index:1002;
should be changed to something higher than the z-index of the navigation on your site.
Hey there
I’m hoping you might be able to help. For some reason the plugin only seems to work for me with IE. (oddly enough)
I can’t get the popup to show in firefox, safari or chrome.
Any ideas?
Many thanks
Brad
Hi Brad,
I’m not sure why that might be, unless you have it configured to show only for non-logged in visitors and you’re logged in with the other browsers…
Quick question. I can’t find the answer anywhere…
This code: [optincrusher_thankyou]
Works when I put it in a thank you page within WordPress…
But when I put it in a page outside of wordpress I can’t figure out where to put it so it works. Is it possible to do that or does the thank you page have to be within wordpress?
Thank you
Mike
Mike,
The thank you page has to be in wordpress since [optincrusher_thankyou] is a shortcode that actually gets translated into a cookie setting script on the page. You can probably create a page that will render the cookie script then view source and copy that into a static HTML page if you like.
Cool, thanks for responding back. I will look into the cookie script.
Mike
Hi Dan,
just installed + thank you for your work.
Recently i paid $ for Digi List Builder slidein but did not like they’re footer
slider, the rest i liked.
Thus, i installed your Footer slidein.
The dilemma i have is now your slider appears and their After Post text Before comments text
does not.
See a post from hunting.helping-us-with.com/officialblog
+ a post from camping.helping-us-with.com/officialblog
to see what i’m facing
I thought that by delaying for 5000 milliseconds that the conflict would be resolved,……
…..but not so
Any suggestions,
-Steve
Dan,
i just realized that DigiList automatically hides their slidein once
someone has clicked on it. I did while testing it. They don’t have
the option you have in the setup where the user can control this.
-Steve
Steve,
Everything appears to be working fine when I look at your site.
Daniel
I am having trouble intalling the opt in crusher on my wordpress blog. I do not have an option on my wordpress blog to “intall plugins” am I missing something or does wordpress no longer allow plugins? Please help!!
thank you
Johnny
Johnny,
optincrusher can’t be used on wordpress.com. It will only work on self hosted blogs.
Hi Dave,
Great plugin! Got a quick question, for some reason I can’t get my autoresponder code to work properly with optincrusher. Here’s the code:
First name
E-mail address
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Jerome
Jerome,
The code won’t come through on a comment. What email service provider are you using? I might have a video for it. You can also manually massage the form code to remove the style and other bits so just the basics are left.
Hi Daniel,
Love your plugin and going to work on customizing shortly. I am having a small problem with the way in which my form displays on the light box. Can you advise? Thanks.
~Marcus
what’s the problem Marcus?
Hello Daniel,
Your opt in crusher is amazing, even compared to paid versions like slideincode.com which I currently use for my site http://www.ivyleagueotc.com.
My partners and I are working on a huge upgrade for our website and would love to install your optin crusher on a site built with http://www.invisionpower.com. Could you show me how to complete this? We would be willing to pay for help as long as its reasonable.
We really want to use this on a regular site.
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the script… its brilliant!
Do I put the [optincrusher_thankyou] code inside the MailChimp thankyou that gets put up after a subscriber signs up or….?
Thanks,
/Brian
Yes. You would put this in a page where the user ends up after subscribing to prevent it showing to him again.
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. That’s what I thought. I navigate to Mailchimp->Lists->Forms->Signup Thankyou Page. I put the [optincrusher_thankyou] directly after the following text:
We need to confirm your email address.
To complete the subscription process, please click the link in the email we just sent you.
*|HTML:LIST_ADDRESS_HTML|*
I save it but it doesn’t seem to do anything.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
/Brian
You don’t want it in the page that tells them to confirm. You want it in the page that you show them AFTER they confirm.
It doesn’t do anything that’s visible. It just sets a cookie so that the optin form won’t display again.
Thanks Daniel,
I think my problem was that I was putting it in the mailchimp thankyou email as opposed to redirecting to my own thankyou webpage. Got there in the end with your help.
Optincrusher no longer works on mobile devices such as iPhone now does it?
optincrusher won’t display on mobile devices. I may work on a mobile version at some point…
Did I see in one of your online tutorials that you previously supported mobile devices… but not 100%?
I think its a really good idea to create this for mobile. I drive most of my traffic to my blog at the moment using Twitter and I bet most of them are using mobile devices and therefore not seeing optincrusher which is a pity. Did you disable optincrusher from mobile devices by detecting the screen size and just not displaying it in that case, or is there a lot of coding needs to be carried out for mobile. If you could enable it for mobile browsers that are just as capable as a larger browser (e.g. safari iPhone) then that would be good.
Regards,
/Brian
Hi Daniel,
I added Optincrusher to my new site and it looks great, Thanks! The issue I’m having and its most likely because I don’t know enough, is that I can only collect emails, not the persons name. I’m using Feed Burner and can find no settings to change this in either place. How do I collect their name to?
feedburner doesn’t support collecting names. Only emails. If you want to collect names and emails you’ll need an email service like aweber or mailchimp.
Thanks
Hi Daniel. I enabled your plugin on 2 of my sites (it is awesome btw!!!) But on one of my sites, it doesn’t show up. I *think* it may be a jquery conflict issue. How can I manually call the function/plugin if I wanted to try to manually load it in the footer for instance? Is this possible? Or is there something I can do if there is a jquery conflict? Your response is appreciated. Thanks.
I wouldn’t expect jquery to affect it since I don’t use jquery. I actually chose to write the javascript myself so that it would be small and not add any download size/time to a page. The actual javascript is just a few kB. You can try removing jquery items to see if there’s some connection, but I don’t expect that to be the case.
What a dissapointment, subscribed to get the download to optincrusher and got asked for a password, which I did not get.
Roland,
Don’t be disappointed. The password is in the welcome email right below the download link.
Hi Daniel, Thank you so much for creating this exciting opt-in plugin for free. I was just about to purchase pop up domination 2. Boy was I lucky this is way better. I am having a problem though. After I installed it the fields where the red arrow is pointing are not there, its just solid back ground how do I fix this?
Joseph,
It looks like you haven’t provided a form to display. The form will come from your email hosting provider, like aweber.
Hello,
Is it possible to configure the plugin for my home page only?
And, the instructions to prevent the plugin from appearing to the already subscribed … has me stumped. I don’t have a site thank-you message. Using feedburner.
The plugin is attractive, works well, videos are excellent. Thank you for sharing your work.
Barb, It isn’t possible to limit it to the homepage at this time.
I like your customizations. Great work.
Is there a way to have a different footer add show up depending on what page is displayed?
Right now all you can do is omit the footer from specific pages. Other than that it either shows or it doesn’t.
Wow this is an excellent plugin downloaded it and I am going through the customization video thanks heaps for this excellent tutorial and plug in cant wait to build my list.
Are there any programs that do the same thing as photoshop. the only thing i would really need is the selection tool to crop images
Gimp is an open source alternative to photoshop. It’s powerful, but not always easy to use.
Daniel I would also like to thank you and congratulate you on such a great tool.
Boss, your software is lovely. thanks a lot. I could install it successfully, though i’m not a techie…
Hello Daniel,
I just wanted to thank you for the opportunity to download your software. I installed Optin Crusher but the lightbox which opens and displays on a separate page is partially obscured by my theme’s menu. Am I doing something wrong? The lightbox has the menu bar running across it so it’s not usable
Is this theme dependant or should it work with all themes?
Thanks very much
Paul.
Paul,
It will work with all themes, but there are some themes that deviate from the typical WordPress approach. In those cases it takes some extra work and may require understanding of the inner workings of WordPress.
I find that those are very few among thousands of installations.
Hi Daniel,
Great plugin. We’re using the authnet one as well. The optin bar doesn’t seem to display properly on the site either for me or for two other people that have check on their computers.
For some reason, the name and email boxes are one line lower than the red arrow.
If it matters, we’re using Semi-Fluid Layout Type (-<1265px) on http://findminoritycontracts.com
All the best,
Marcia
It looks like you need to change the image based submit button to a regular submit button on your optin form. That should fix the slight alignment issue.
Good luck.
Hey, thanks Daniel. Got it switched. Am clearly a coding ninja. Or possibly just very lucky with some copy and pasting.
Daniel, Really cool free plug in – and I am excited to use it. Quick question – does it work with responsive themes – ie: will it display properly for mobile viewing or does it shrink down?
it currently doesn’t work for mobile devices. It’s not responsive either.
Can I transfer the plugin settings into Russian? The plugin does not have problems with reading the Cyrillic?
I don’t mind if you translated it for your sites, but the license prohibits redistribution.
Hi Daniel!
I’m helping Erin at The Humbled Homemaker install the footer. I have inkscape on my computer but for some reason when I open “images” inkscape is not there. I tried grabbing one image but inkscape will not allow me to modify it. Tried uninstall/restall and still not working. Pls help! Thank you so much!
Nicole
Hi Nicole,
I’m not sure what you’re asking. If you follow the video directly, that should be all you need to get a customized look for your site. I suggest watching the video again.
This may have been stated elsewhere, but I could not find it… Does Optin Crusher work with Infusionsoft???
Thanks!
Lou
Lou, if infusionsoft can create an HTML optin form, then it will work with optincrusher.
thank you very much
