There is an interesting free online application at http://www.screentoaster.com that may be helpful.

If I recall correctly, you can do up to 20 minute screen captures.

I agree. Sony Vegas is a paradox. In some ways it's easily the best editor for ease of use, power and stability. In other things it falls on its face. Aside from really poor editing of screen capture videos, it messes up Kodak Zi8 clips until you do a bunch of acrobatics and adjustments to quicktime. It's a real disappointment, especially because I love the program other than those two pitfalls.

Camstudio codecs fail when working on videos with Sony Vegas. Artifacts appear and the videos are choppy.

Hey Ron,

Thanks for the post. This is similar to what I've used, but I don't think it's a fit for everyone. As it turns out the MP4 codec(s) available with sony vegas don't do a very good job compressing screen capture videos. Zooming and other effects can be tricky too. CamStudio varies from one OS to another and has sync problems in Vegas. If you're a savvy user you can overcome many of these issues, but you pay in your time.

On the PC side of things, you can capture the screencast using CamStudio, as you've mentioned.

But the reality is that you'll need to do some post-production on the video in order to make it look decent.

Rather than using Camtasia and paying $300 for it, I believe a better option is to use Sony Vegas.

So on the low end, you would be using CamStudio (free) to capture and then Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD ($30 on Amazon) to do your editing.

Sony Vegas allows you to export your finished movie into either mp4 or mov (Quicktime) format, in order to upload it to YouTube.

Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!

Good information, I have had good luck with Screen flow (mac user) I think you are right on about having the ability to capture screen video. It is very helpful to see things work before you start to dive into a software, or web app. When I hit a web site, I immediately try to watch video tutorials ( I am very visual in my learning) It helps me understand so much quicker.
thanks Dan
